International Surfing Day at La Boya
We have just planned a beach cleaning activity as part of the local ISD, next June the 20th. La Boya sits in a very poor part of the Boca Chica town, with poverty comes lack of education and with lack of education you have the root of all that is wrong.
We will collect trash bins and permanently place them at the beach, where there are none at the moment. Also, we will donate some bins to the local hospital, that operates with very little resources.
Also, the friends from teh local chapter of Reef Check will take part of this years celebrations and they will do a dive to monitor La Boya´s reef health.

The young locals put up a huge effort and worked real hard at the clean up, they really surprised us all. Even the guys from the Town Hall showed up with a bulldozer and a truck to pick up trash. They have promised us they will be paying more attention to this little corner of their jurisdiction.
Our event ran on schedule, but most attendees didnt show up until very late inthe afternoon, after they where done at work. But the locals and us regulars were there on time.
We got to see the swell build up from 0.5 feet all the way to overhead and surfed many sessions trough-out the ISD weekend, swell is maxing right now courtesy of the tropical depression that´s out there in the Caribbean Sea.
Thank you to the Navy and the guys at City Hall for giving us the permits for our activity.
Many thanks to all who took part and special thanks for those that volunteered thier time to make this happen. Also, special thanks to the donors ofthe drums, the beverages and the food we all had that day. You made the day!

Good luck with your beach clean up Eric. Thanks for taking the initiative to keep your beaches clean.
Stay active!
Glad to hear you are going to do a beach clean up in D.R. I first suggest partnering with an environmental organization that does good work in D.R. Surfrider is always a good one but there may be a local group down there that is better. Hopefully, they can provide volunteers to help the clean up. Then I suggest getting some surf companies to donate some items that can be used in goodie bags to give to people who participate in the clean up. Hit some local business's up for donations. Make some flyers and post/e-mail them around. I usually like to partner with a local surf shop which is a great way for word of mouth to spread and then just go for it. Take photos and spread them around so it gets some coverage and grows next year!
