The Surfrider Foundation Atlanta Chapter was able to pull out more than 1,000 lbs of trash from the Chattahoochee River, including the surrounding park areas. This area is located 266 miles from Atlanta's closest surf break at Tybee Island. This section of the river rarely gets cleaned because of all the rapids, so it felt really good to get out make a difference. The water team was made up of 16 people in 7 canoes, 1 kayak and a SUP. The land team of approximately 15 people worked the park by foot. Both groups pulled out tons of trash like tires, a CPU, balls, and styrofoam but most of all, plastic bottles. It’s always such a shame to see so many plastic water bottles polluting the very river that provides our drinking water. This is what the Surfrider Foundation Rise Above Plastics Campaign is all about, eliminating single use plastic. (Note our event took place several weeks before ISD 2009 because we had to coordinate with the National Park Service.)

Generally speaking all our clean-ups, whether a beach, creek, lake, park, etc., (Central Texas Chapter) are inland. Our nearest typical beach is approximately 250 miles away. We have over the more recent years focused our efforts on local watersheds, given their relatively quick transition out of the Hill Country, through the blackland prairie and coastal plains on down to the Guld of Mexico.

For ISD 2009, we had approximately 30 volunteers show up to participate in a clean-up of Barton Creek, a beloved gem in the middle of Austin, Texas. Debris, recyclables, and general trash were collected and from the instream creek channel and riparian areas, and mixed use trails around Zilker Park. Following the clean-up recyables were sorted and transported to Ecology Actions recycling center.

I try to make at least one more person Ocean Minded everyday. It is my job and my hobbie. I am the administrator for a local environmental org. We are a Keep America Beautiful affiliate, the coordinator for the Onslow, NC International Coastal Cleanup and NC Big Sweep beach sweep. In my spare time, I do mini beach cleanups before every surf session for good wave karma. I have been a volunteer for the NC Big Sweep/International Coastal Cleanup and cleaning up beaches in NC for over 15 years. I was a grom when I started and now I coordinate them. I also volunteered at the local Wildlife Shelter for years as a grom taking care of injured wildlife many due to discarded trash or fishing line. I walk the beach at least 2 times a week picking up trash for a couple-few miles. On one of my trash trips this winter, i came across an injured Common Loon due to discarded fishing line (see photo) and this I have seen many times. I removed the hook and line very carefully and took the Common Loon to the local wildlife rehabilitator and the bird has since been released back into the wild after recovery.
Being Ocean Minded is something that I also go to schools and teach all year long. This year I have been to 10 schools and have given presentations to thousands of students about environmental protection and stewardship. Afterall these students are the future of being Ocean Minded. We teach them, they teach their parents, and the wheel starts turning.
The ocean is my passion. I am a proud Eastern NC native and with that pride comes responsibility. I have the responsibility to Mother Ocean to protect her through environmental education and stewardship each and every day. I also started and continue to coordinate the annual Earth and Surf Fest in North Topsail Beach, NC. It is an environmental awareness event that also incorporates a Surf Competition, Paddleboard Race, Canoe Cleanup on the Intracoastal, Beach Cleanup, Volleyball touney that benefits the Sea Turtle Hospital, and Enviro booths set up to teach about how to protect the coastal environment.

Well that is me in a nut shell. Hey don't forget to recycle!! I am also the recycle coordinator for Onslow County and the Project Director for the Environmental Indicators Report.
I cant find that photo in my files, but send me an email and I can send it via email this week.

Aloha,
